FLY SAF
A research project with a system design approach to understand the usage of sustainable aviation fuel in the aviation industry.

A project for Terra Carta Sustainable Market Initiative
SPECIAL MENTIONS

About the
project

The aim of this short project was to understand the market of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and how it fits within the industry and what can be done to improve the existing situation.

Project deliverable: To create a service for consumers to increase the adoption of SAF fueled flights.

Approach
We took a systems design approach to the problem of why the aviation industry has not adopted sustainable aviation fuel yet. We did this through quick workshops as we had limited time. This approach worked best to map and intervene in a fairly large systemic issue.
Discover
SAF can reduce life cycle carbon emissions by 80%. It is not popular yet because it requires extensive infrastructure making it 18% more expensive than normal jet fuel.
Most airlines have pledged a NetZero 2050 goal and are looking for creative solutions.
Define
Through our research we saw the majority of the problem was that flyers could not visualise the impact SAF would have and hence could not justify the 18% hike of flight prices.
We saw this as our opportunity.

Develop
We had multiple interviews and brainstorming session and realised that a customer facing approach would work best.
FLYSAF is a digital product that encourages flyers to choose SAF and it visualizes the positive impact your decision makes on the environment.
Deliver
The service is business-to- business model and would essentially be integrated as a tool in existing airline apps and websites.
The integration would easier for most companies and can be designed according to the brand requirements.
